Life in the Woods

Scott Walker January 14, 2014

Taking a step back in time is sometimes refreshing. It is good to go places where others seldom trek.

I recently visited a campground deep in the hills of Middle Tennessee. The site is full of kind hearts, artwork and more. The shells of old buses from the 1960's are being used as homes, trailers once used to haul freight have been converted into living rooms, tepee's that are two stories tall sit on the hillside and a stage is the focus of all residents directly in the middle of the grounds. Music is a big deal at the site I visited and you can see it in the residents faces.

The site has a Christian overtone to it as residents and visitors honor the prayer circle. The circle is an area where people drop their sins and move on with their life, sometimes starting over. The interesting thing about the circle, no one removes items left behind. I even saw a nice acoustic guitar in the circle. Some of the other things I noticed included beer bottles, jewelry, possibly from a past love, shoes that were used to carry someone to a place of crime and more. I also noticed two containers that appeared to contain someones' ashes. Evidently, the family of two past visitors wanted their loved one to be placed on the grounds because the site meant so much to them. Of the two containers, one person died from cancer and the second was killed on a car accident.
