This is one of the most amazing homeless men I have ever met. He lives in a cargo van parked in downtown Washington, DC. The van does not move as it is broken down. Police overlook it when writing ticket's.
Inside his van are plastic Rubbermaid boxes of blankets, clothes, Bibles, tents and sleeping bags - all of which were donated to him. Every morning he unloads the van in a small city park along Pennsylvania Avenue. He then sits on a park bench with a Bible in hand handing out the goods to other homeless men and women.
This giver then sets up a sign next to his collection of goods. His sign stated (word for word exactly how he has it), “202-994-6500: President of George Washington University. Please some of you, let Mr. Steven Knapp, would love to talk about the House of Worship on 814 20th St. – I an many others can take Nomads, Wanderers, Homeless, Fugitives and Vagabond’s off the streets. God Bless You All.”
I asked what the sign was for and he suggested the university has some type of chapel on their campus that he would like to utilize as a night time shelter for the homeless. This man, whom I nicknamed The Giver, even listed the president’s phone number so that the community can call the president and ask that he allow the homeless in their building.
