“Death is no more than passing from one room into another. But there's a difference for me, you know. Because in that other room I shall be able to see.” ― Helen Keller
Imagine being completely blind and homeless.
As I walked closer to this man and bent down to his level as he was sitting on the steps of a closed New York business, I noticed he did not see me. I looked down and saw a walking cane. When I spoke, he was startled as he reached for the cane. I calmed him when I mentioned that he needed to feel one step down to find his cane.
I asked if he would mind having his picture taken and he said "Okay." He then began to speak in Spanish. I tried hard to communicate with him, but was at a complete loss. I can not speak Spanish and he could not see my hand gestures as I was speaking. He could not speak English other then to say "Okay."
