No cars, no phones, no computers, no electricity... just life. When touring Amish territory, you have to be respectful of their values, religious beliefs and the rules they follow. As an unspoken rule, if you take a photo from a distance in a news documentary style and as long as they are not facing the camera, it is for the most part okay, as they are not agreeing to the photo or consenting. However, posed pictures and photos where they are looking directly into the lens are frowned upon.
In these shots I concentrated on the homes and farms. In the one picture that displays a husband and wife traveling to town in a horse and buggy, they lowered their heads as they neared as I was pointing the camera at their approach. When they passed me a second time on their return trip home, I had my camera lowered and they politely waved and carried on.
